Class Basics
Social Studies Basics
1. Physical Features Vocabulary - Pick the words that you do not know. For those words you need to write out the definition, find an example of the feature in the world, draw a picture, and write a sentence using the word.
2. Latitude and Longitude Practice - worksheet that you will need to pick up from me 3. Types of map reading - pick up from me to read |

Plate Tectonics Reading
Directions for Plate Tectonics Map
- For the plate tectonics reading, you need to read through the different sections and summarize each of them for the organizer. You can have 2 sentences for plate tectonic basics, 3 sentences and 1 picture for how plate move, 2 sentences and 1 picture for divergent, 2 sentences and 1 picture for convergence, and 2 sentences and 1 picture for transform.
Directions for Plate Tectonics Map
- Use page 20-21 from the class atlas. Label the directions of the plate, volcanoes, location of major earthquakes, and shade the earthquake areas.
- If you do not get done in class or were absent, you will need to come in during ET to use the atlas or come in before or after school.
Factors of Climate Directions
You will receive a map that is titled Factors of Climate. It covers the different factors that create our climates. Your job is to take notes from the powerpoint and follow the map directions that will tell you how to complete the map. For the notes, please put the information on the slide in the box that is labeled on the map. The information about the sun goes around the sun that is drawn on the map. |
Directions for the Map
1. Write your name in the name box in the top right corner 2. Take out the green colored pencil from the bag and trace the dotted line called the Tropic of Cancer. Then trace the dotted line called Tropic of Capricorn. Then trace the line on the edge of the map between 20˚N and 20˚S basically connecting the lines you traced. 3. Take the green colored pencil and in the map key draw a small line or colored box (in the green) and label it Tropics. DO NOT take up too much space in the key. 4. Take out the purple colored pencil and trace the line labeled Arctic Circle. Continue to trace along the outside of the map so you have created a box. 5. Take your purple colored pencil again and trace the line labeled Antarctic Circle and repeat the process you did for #4. 6. Then take the purple colored pencil again and in the map key put a purple line and label it polar 7. Take out the orange colored pencil and trace along the edge of the map between the green line and purple line and continue all the way around. Do this on both sides of the green lines. 8. Take the orange colored pencil and make an orange line in the map key and label it Temperate Region. 9. Put away the green, purple, and orange colored pencils and take out the red and blue colored pencils. 10. In the atlas provided, turn to page 24-25. 11. You are going to be adding the ocean currents to your map using the red and blue colored pencils. 12. Start with the red colored pencil and draw on your map the red lines that you see in the atlas that represent the warm ocean currents. Use the latitude lines to guide where you draw along with the outlines of the continents. Be Careful. 13. In the map key draw a red arrow and label it warm ocean currents 14. Then take out the blue colored pencil and draw in the cool ocean currents using the atlas. Again use the latitude lines and continents to help you place the arrows in the right spots. 15. In the map key draw a blue arrow and label it cool ocean currents. 16. Put away the red and blue colored pencils. 17. Turn in the atlas to page 14-15 and take out the brown colored pencil. 18. You are going to draw in lines and symbols for the high mountain ranges of the world. Use the physical map in the atlas to help you. 19. In the map key draw the mountain symbol and label it mountain range |
Blue Gold Questions
For the video we watch over water resources here are some highlights you should remember:
For the video we watch over water resources here are some highlights you should remember:
- The earth does have a water cycle that continually produces fresh water but the problem is that we are using water and polluting our water faster than it is replenished by the earth.
- The wetlands act as a natural filter for water.
- The water cycle is prohibited in cities because the pavement does not allow for the water to sink into the ground.
- We are using over 30 billion tons of ground water and this is a problem because we don't have any idea what is left below.
- One of the major problems we are having with water is that we have disrupted the water cycle through cities and deforestation. We are not allowing the water to soak back into the ground and therefore causing more erosion.
Natural Resources Directions
Today you will be looking at the types of natural resources that are available to us on Earth. You need to a piece of paper to complete this work today. At the end of class you should staple your plate tectonics map, climate map, Blue Gold paper, and this piece of paper together.
1. Title your piece of paper Natural Resources and put your name in the top right corner.
2. Then create a t-chart that with Nonrenewable and Renewable as your column headings. This t-chart does not need to take up the entire paper maybe 5 spaces or so. Please take the words listed and place where you think they belong in the t-chart.
4. Now, look at the websites provided below about natural resources, how they are used, and resource conservation. Using the websites answer the questions below on your piece of paper. You should also check your defintions and edit them if they don't make sence with what you have read in the websites. You can also do your own searches if you would like.
6. What types of things are conservationists doing to help hold on to the resources we have left? Do you think these strategies will work in time to save some of our resources? Why? Restate in your answer or make a list with a heading.
7. What countries or types of countries do you think will run out of resources first? Why? Restate in your answer.
8. Which resources do you think are more essential to the success of people and the continuing of the human race? Why? Restate in your answer.
9. Take a look at the resource map for North America and Central America. What types are resources are found there?
10. How do the types of resources relate to the physical processes: plate tectonics, climate, and the water cycle? Restate in your answer or create a graphic that illustrates the connection. Explain what the connection is.
11. Hypothetical: What will life be like for humans when the nonrenewable resources are gone? How will human lives and lifestyles be different? Based on our currect uses and practices will we even be able to keep up the management of the renewable resources?
